Abstract
The aim of this study was to identify the barriers and Solutions for the development of sports among prisoners. This research was descriptive in nature and applied in purpose, utilizing a mixed-methods approach. The qualitative portion of the study including prison directors, officials, staff, and inmates. The quantitative section targeted all prison directors, officials, and staff across the country, estimated to be around 160 individuals. Purposeful sampling was used for the qualitative part until theoretical saturation was reached, and cluster random sampling was employed for the quantitative part. Data analysis in the qualitative section was conducted through coding, while exploratory factor analysis and the Friedman test were used for the quantitative section. Ultimately, six categories of barriers were identified in order of priority: facility and equipment barriers, managerial and organizational barriers, knowledge and awareness barriers, individual barriers, cultural and social barriers, and COVID-19. Additionally, five categories of strategies were identified in order of priority: infrastructural and financial strategies, knowledge and motivational strategies, managerial and organizational strategies, cultural and social strategies, and educational and media strategies. The study recommends that the country's prison management and rehabilitation organizations take steps to overcome the identified barriers and implement the proposed strategies to enhance sports development among prisoners.
