Abstract
Purpose: considering the very important role of participation in physical activity in adolescents’ physical and mental health, the current research aimed to investigate the status of health-oriented physical activity in adolescents and provide a conceptual model for the development of adolescents’ participation in health-oriented physical activities.
Methods: In this research, 384 boys and girls (age range between 14 to 17 years-old) from Golestan province were selected by available sampling method and completed the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Also, 11 experts participated in semi-structured interviews.
Findings: The results showed that more than half of the adolescents do not participate in health-oriented physical activity. Also, girls have lower health-oriented physical activity than boys. The qualitative part of the research showed that there are several individual and social factors that influence the development of participation in physical activity. Also, managerial, cultural, financial and urban factors interfere in this process. In addition, several solutions such as those related to the trustees, municipality, cultural areas and economic and financial issues have an effect on the development of adolescents’ participation in health-oriented physical activity, which, if implemented correctly, can be expected to increase adolescents’ participation in health-oriented physical activities. Reduction of treatment costs and general satisfaction of citizens are also expected consequences.
Conclusion: Overall, the results of this research emphasize the need to adopt strategies to improve the health-oriented physical activity level of adolescents, focusing on girls.
